Swingers Move

After 4 years of me asking (or maybe begging) Roy for a new house, he said yes.  I wanted more space for our growing family to work, play, learn, explore and entertain.  We started getting our house ready to sell mid February.  We replaced a few doors, got new carpet in the living room, Roy power washed the exterior of the house, I packed up lots of toys and kitchen stuff to help open up/clear out some space, repainted a hallway ceiling, did touch up paint around the entire house and did a deep clean.  Thanks to Mimi for having the kids for the weekend so we could work on getting the house ready.  We listed our house through FSBO Homes (For Sale By Owner Homes) and they came in and took professional pictures.  Our home went online March 3 and we sold it on March 11.  Thanks to Nana Sue for showing our home to the future owners while we were out of town.  We figured our home would sell quick and we are thankful how God brought the right couple to our front door, who said the house was “just perfect” for them.  We were on our trip to Arizona when it sold so upon our arrival home we were eager to begin the house search.

In an attempt to document the events and happenings of our house search, but yet not overshare all the details, I made a list of gifts/blessings to give God the glory for His faithfulness and provision along the way.

*Our relator Ingrid (former coworker of mine) was such a blessing.  She was patience with us, checked in with us often, led and encouraged us during our search.
*Roy’s work schedule is so incredibly flexible and he was able to join us for every showing (except one), no matter what time of day it was.
*Friends helped out with our kids from time to time so we didn’t need to drag them along to every showing.
*The blessing of the internet and the ability to look at homes any time of day and from almost anywhere.
*The prayers, support and listening ears of so many.
*God closing and opening doors to direct us to the right house at the right time.
*I am so grateful for the Holy Spirit’s prompting and affirmation.
*A text from a friend making this home come to our attention.
*A friend stopping by at just the right time with a hug, a bag of chocolates, a bowl of fruit and 30 minutes to stay and help pack.
*So many late night talks discussing, processing and evaluating with Roy.
*The muscles, sweat and servant hearts of many friends on moving day.
*Moving cost us basically nothing (boxes for free, 2 moving trucks for free, storing our stuff for the month for free).
*The generosity of our dear friends to share their unfinished basement to store all of our boxes for the month.
*We had two options for temporary housing, which gave us freedom to take our time in the house search, to find the right one, yet know we had a place to go after our house closing on May 25th.
*Discernment and clarity of family goals, finances and time.
*Roy’s parents opening their home to us for a month while we are in transition and helping us set up their basement as our temporary home.
*My mom making a full meal of food for the entire moving crew.
*Friends offering to host the kids for playdates so I could pack.
*My parents watching the kids for 4 days over the moving weekend so we could focus on the making the move and getting our space at Roy’s parents set up.
*Patience and perseverance along the journey, even when it seemed a bit hopeless that we would ever find a place.
*The chance to look at about 30 houses during our search, to educate ourselves so we could make an informed decision when the time came.
*The answers to prayer in our new space…4 bedrooms, finished basement, park close by, quiet neighborhood, 3 car garage, updates in the home, a “bonus room” for more space on the main level, established landscaping.
*The journey of knowing we didn’t need to find something perfect, but that would cross most of the things off of our wish list.
*Location closer to Roy’s work, our church and several friends.

I am so proud of Roy for all the extra work he did to sell our house by owner.  He led the way and fielded all of the phone calls.  What a great guy and a gifted leader.

Enjoying a picnic on the driveway on one of our last days together at the house.

We said good-bye to this tree.  It was given to us as a wedding gift and we planted it shortly after our wedding.  Look how it has grown, not totally straight I should note, yet proves to be a home for birds, a place of shade and an outward example of God's faithfulness.

Checking out "Pirate Park" by our new house for the first time.

We will be able to hop on the bike/walking trail system just minutes away from our house.

Hudson had a playdate with his buddy Thomas on a Friday morning so I could pack.

That same morning our friend Catherine came over to play with Greta (and she introduced her to the SnapChat app).

Playing with friends for the morning so Mommy could do a few errands and pack moving boxes.

The moving truck was available on Sunday, May 21st so it was declared Moving Day.  We started around 1:00pm and Roy and I dropped the truck off just as it was getting dark Sunday night.

We had over 20 friends show up to help on moving day.  What a blessing!

Our boxes filled up about half of their basement space and a lot of hands helped get them down there and make it all manageable.

The 2nd load ready to go out to Nana and Papa's house.

Feeding part of the moving crew after finishing their work.

My parents hosted the kids on moving weekend but I was excited to have them back.

Our last family photo on Westgate Drive.

God has been so faithful to us.  I am forever grateful for this home and the many blessings of the 10 years we lived there.  We filled its walls with songs of praise, lots of books, some tears, good food, celebrations and thousands of memories.

Spring Swimming

Hudson loves to swim.  Being in the water is one of his favorite things and he has really improved his swimming skills over the past year.  He is looking forward to another round of private swimming lessons this summer, but we got him off to an early start by doing 8 weeks of lessons at the YMCA this spring.  They had a small class of 4 homeschool kids, and met at 1:00 on Tuesdays.  Hudson's favorite part of the lessons were counting all the "bobs" he could do while his friends were doing their swimming practice.  At one point he bragged about getting up to 600.  He passed his class with flying colors and is ready to go swimming at the "Tiger Pool" as soon as it opens for the season.

our favorite GRADuate

One of our Drake students, Hani, graduated on Saturday May 13th.  It was a busy week for our family and my mom was in town, but we were still able to attend her graduation ceremony.  We arrived JUST in time to see her walk across the stage.  Over the years, and after having little kids, we learned that it works well to arrive about 1 hour after the commencement starts, just in time to see them hand out the diplomas and the graduates walk across the stage.

Suckers during the ceremony kept them happy and quiet.  :)

I made Hani a Shutterfly book as a graduation gift, filled with memories from her years in Des Moines and the activities we did together.  I'm so excited for her to share it with her family back in Malaysia.

We love Hani!

These girls just adore our kids.  Its such a joy to witness them care for and invest in a relationship with them.

If Hani stuck around another year or two I'm pretty sure Hudson would pass her up in height.  Hudson is 6 in this picture and Hani is 22, and there actually is not that much height difference.

Congratulations Hani, we love you!

Grandparent's Day Celebration

We hosted a Grandparent's Day Celebration with our Kindergarten Co-op group on Thursday, May 11th.  Everyone had saved the date months in advance, we sent out invites, prepared our songs and made personalized gifts leading up to our special celebration.  The day arrived with beautiful sunshine and a room filled with love, which proved to be super sweet in every way.  The kids sang a song entitled, The Fruit of the Spirt, so we went with a fruit theme, specifically pineapple.

Our group (minus one who didn't want to be in the picture).  So proud of and thankful for these beautiful kids.  I believe God formed this group and I'm grateful we got to learn, play and explore together this year.

Hudson and Leeland ready to get the show on the road.

The program...

Kara picked out the songs and taught them to the kids.  She also hosted the event and initiated the idea.  It proved to be a great opportunity for the kids to show off their skills.

The Fruit of the Spirit song...

Tis' So Sweet to Trust in Jesus...

The Books of the Old Testament...

Each child prepared their own "Show and Tell."  Hudson did a piano presentation explaining some of the musical skills and vocabulary he learned this year and then he modeled them on the piano.  He was calm and confident and we are so proud of what he accomplished this year.  I'm pretty sure his Nana and Mimi (who are both piano players) were pretty proud.

Showing everyone his C, F and G chords.

I put together a simple picture display in the hallway showing memories from our year together.

I was in charge of the invitations, gifts and decorations.  I made these gift bags to match the invitations.  I had so much fun making them.

When our group met in April the kids made/stamped these fruit canvas bags, one for each set of grandparents.

Mimi made the 3 12/ hour trip to join the celebration and were so glad to have her.  We missed Bapa Rog because he was planting corn.  He will enjoy seeing the videos though.

Stephanie, me, and Kara...the moms and teachers.

Stephanie was in charge of the refreshments and they were a hit!  Kettle popcorn, mixed nuts, chocolate wafers, punch, pineapple cut out sugar cookies and yogurt and fruit parfaits.

The pineapple cookies, plates and napkins were my favorite part.

Daddy has such a flexible job and was able to come for the celebration too.

Enjoying books with friends after the refreshments.

This event was probably one of my favorite memories from our entire homeschool year.  It was so wonderful to work with the team of moms/teachers and we each got to use our gifts and creativity to make it come together.  The best part was sharing it all with others, those we love.

Tulip Time 2017 - Dutch for a Day

We spent Saturday, May 6th in Pella for their 82nd annual Tulip Time celebration.  This years theme for the celebration was, Dutch for a Day.  It was a picture perfect day and we soaked it every minute of it.  We got lots of sunshine, filled our tummies with yummy Dutch foods, saw lots of perfect tulips and spent time with a few of our favorite people.  It was a splendid day.

Giving a thumbs up as we hit the road for Pella.

This Dutch girl loved all the tulips.  They were just right, so beautiful.

Roy waited in line at the Jaarsma Bakery for our Dutch treats for 1 hour.  They were certainly worth the wait.  Hudson and I chose the same thing, a puff pillow.

We spent most of the day with my dear friend Emily and her two oldest boys.

Lots of smiles for time with friends and beautiful tulips.

We saw another one of my favorite ladies, Geselle, who was a Tulip Queen once upon a time.

Getting excited for the parade to start.

Of course we made a stop to check out all the old tractors.  The 4010 John Deere is similar to one Papa Ed had when Daddy was a kid.

We met up with Hudson's buddy Jonah before the parade.  Jonah was dressed in his Dutch costume, ready to scrub the streets.

 Enjoying suckers during the parade.

Greta was all eyes and ears when the band marched by.

The queens court carriage passing by.  Their unique Dutch costumes is always one of my favorite things to see at Tulip Time.

Our last treat before heading for home was poffertjes, mini Dutch pancakes.
